Upon graduating from the National University of Singapore in 1983 with a medical degree, Dr Denis Cheong embarked on his training in the field of General Surgery.He did his fellowship in Colorectal Surgery at Cleveland Clinic, Florida, USA under the tutelage of Dr Steven Wexner. Upon returning to Singapore, he worked his way up to become the Director of the Digestive Diseases Centre and Head of Colorectal Surgery at Tan Tock Seng Hospital. In 2008, he was again awarded his third HMDP fellowship to hone his skills in Laparoscopic Colorectal Surgery at the Australasian Endosurgery Centre in Brisbane.

Dr Cheong is highly renowned for his extensive experience in managing anal conditions like hemorrhoids, fistula and fissure, as well as treatment of colorectal cancer and diverticular disease. He is an expert endoscopist and has performed more than 14,000 colonoscopies over the past 20 years. With around 200 operations under his belt, he is touted as a pioneer in laparoscopic colon surgery in Singapore. In 2009, Dr Cheong joined the Panasia Surgery group.

Besides practicing medicine, he has served as a Senior Clinical Lecturer with the NUS Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine and engaged in humanitarian relief work.
